My first hiking adventure in Utah was back in 1983. I spent over two weeks backpacking through the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, Zion NP, and also enjoyed some day hikes in Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, and Goblin Valley.
Back then, Moab was a quiet, laid-back desert town, far from the bustling tourist destination it is today.
Since then, my friends and I have visited southeastern Utah many more times. We’ve driven through some of the interesting towns in this unique part of the Southwest, capturing photos of these places and the interesting sights we encounter. You’ll notice some buildings are abandoned and starting to fall apart, possibly due to the ups and downs of the extractive industry over the years. They’re quiet reminders of a time that’s long gone.
Most folks come here to see ‘The Mighty Five’: Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Zion, and Capitol Reef. The summer months can be incredibly hot and crowded, which is why I usually avoid visiting then. Instead, I like to explore the areas that aren’t as popular and well-known.
